What do your volunteers do? What types of volunteer jobs are available? Core program volunteers help in two primary areas. First, Serving Kids volunteers help to collect and sort donated kids clothing, fill orders for clothing for students, distribute filled orders to various school sites, shop for needed items at thrift stores and discount retailers, etc. Costume Room volunteers help to mend and clean costumes, assist students and teachers to select and check out costumes for school productions, assist community theater groups to rent costumes for outside productions, and solicit or make costumes for needed characters. Foundation volunteers help with the Crystal Ball gala by soliciting and packaging silent auction items, designing table and ballroom decorations, writing copy for event programs, setting up and cleaning out the event itself, and much more. Volunteers can also help decorate and set up/take down our annual Love Our Schools luncheon. We always have a need for volunteers to provide office support, as well. To volunteer with The Jefferson Foundation, call us and let us know what you are interested in doing. Who should a person contact that would like to volunteer? Contact Cyndee Manaugh at 303.982.2210

How & Who Do you Serve in the Community:
PeaceJam's program is built on a pyramid of three simple ideas: Education, Inspiration, and Action. Education: The process starts with education, as the students participate in PeaceJam Programs focusing on the lives of the Nobel Peace Laureates. Programs are available for youth ages 5-29 and each program includes components which stimulate critical thinking skills, strengthen research skills, build skills in leadership and nonviolence, and promote personal reflection and growth. Each program teaches specific content around the lives and work of the participating Nobel Peace Laureates including an exploration of the issues that affect communities – both locally and globally. In this section of the site you will find more information on all PeaceJam Programs and how to Get Trained. Inspiration: Education is followed up by Inspiration, which comes from meeting the Nobel Laureates at conferences, and connecting with other people working on projects for their communities. Through the first-hand stories provided by the Nobel Laureates, youth will get to know each Nobel Peace Laureate on a very personal level - each story emphasizing the Laureates choice to stand up for social justice, human rights, nonviolence, and peace. In the Inspiration section of the site, youth can learn about the Nobel Laureates, find upcoming PeaceJam Events, share and look at pictures and videos from PeaceJammers all over the world in the Gallery, and talk to their fellow PeaceJammers on the Message Boards. Action: After being properly inspired, Jammers get out of their seats and into the streets! They get to work by taking on PeaceJam's Global Call to Action - an ambitious campaign to create and track ONE BILLION projects addressing ten of the most pressing issues facing our world. This section will also give you specific ways to create and implement a Global Call to Action Project, and will be where you can register your project so that it can be counted toward the one billion project goal. We have curricular programs for youth from Kindergarten to College and work with schools, non-profits, faith based organizations, and individual community members.

This year, as in years past, the Gardeners will participate in the larger Arvada Community in several ways: Arvada Community Food Bank: The club purchased a refrigerator that is kept on site for storing produce. Last year we provided over 1500 pounds of fresh produce to the food bank. Annual Open House: Every year for the past fourteen years the club has held an open house. We invite the public for community garden tours, a free potluck luncheon of garden dishes, door prizes donated by local merchants and much talk about growing vegetables in Colorado. Members put in 260 volunteer hours to make last year’s open house the most successful to date. Arvada Harvest Festival: The club participated in three events last year. We had a float in the parade, some members acted as judges or entered item in the food fair and the club organized and participated in the vegetable contest. Members donated 88 hours of time toward the festival. Festival of Scarecrows: This event partners the club with the Arvada Festivals Commission and Historic Olde Town Arvada. The club had a kids’ game and gave out free prizes, had a booth to sell gourds and cornstalks and pumpkins and sponsored a giant pumpkin contest. Last year’s winner was over 300 pounds. The club put 78 volunteer hours into the event. Lutheran Hospice: Members of the club volunteer at the hospice to plant and care for flowers in the otherwise dreary courtyards. The members spent 88 hours this past year and received many thank-you’s from family who had loved ones in the hospice. Additionally, in years past, Gardeners have helped hang lights for Light Up Olde Town.
