This month, the Inclusion & Belonging KAPS Council is proud to spotlight Vee Duran, Community Services Assistant Manager at Apex Park and Recreation District, whose work helps create welcoming experiences that connect residents of all ages and backgrounds across our community.
Apex Park and Recreation District’s mission is to enhance the health of the community socially, emotionally, and physically by serving as a gathering place and trusted resource for recreation, activities, and programs. Through Vee’s leadership, that mission comes to life through inclusive community events, outreach efforts, and experiences that help residents feel connected and engaged.
Building Community Through Shared Experiences
Vee believes community-building happens through both large events and small moments.
In this role, that means creating inclusive gatherings where everyone feels welcome. Outside of work, it means supporting local spaces and investing in the relationships that help communities thrive. Among Vee’s proudest accomplishments are coordinating successful community events that bring residents together, expanding inclusive programming opportunities, and increasing engagement through outreach and partnerships. But some of the most meaningful wins are often the simplest.
“Seeing new participants return and feel a sense of belonging is one of the biggest rewards,” Vee said.
These moments reflect the broader impact of community-building efforts: creating spaces where individuals and families feel comfortable showing up, being themselves, and connecting with others.
Connection That Lasts
What drives Vee’s passion for community-building is seeing the impact that connection can have on people’s lives.
“Knowing that something I helped create can bring families together, spark new friendships, or make someone feel like they truly belong is incredibly meaningful to me,” Vee shared.
If Vee had a magic wand, she would create a community where showing up is easy and everyone knows they belong: a place where small moments turn into lasting relationships and people feel inspired to support and uplift one another every day.
“If we can create spaces where people feel comfortable showing up, being themselves, and connecting with others, then we’re not just hosting events—we’re helping build a stronger, more connected community.”
