February 28, 2025

By Ryan Hecht, Greater Arvada Chamber of Commerce Marketing Director

Jones Tree & Lawn has been in business in Arvada since 1988. Jones Tree offers tree pruning, removal and stump grinding, as well as plant health care. That means fertilizing, insect and disease control for trees and shrubs, as well as fertilization, weed and insect control for lawns.

“We love the Arvada area for its people, parks, close proximity to the mountains…and its trees!” said Jones Tree & Lawn President, Kevin Smith.

How did you get started doing this work?

Kevin: About 23 years ago, I lived in the Pacific Northwest and was able to see the logging practices throughout the landscape. This sparked an interest and motivated me to learn more about forest management. I pursued a degree in forestry and moved out to Colorado in 2007 to be closer to family. This is when I began my career at the company. I started as a groundsman and slowly worked my way up to President of the company.

My business partner Megan started working for the company in 2008 as an office assistant. Through grit and determination, she worked her way up to Vice President. She is exceptional at her job and handles all of the behind the scenes stuff involved with running the company. She is a rockstar and I couldn’t imagine being in business with anybody else.

How big is your team?

About 15 employees. Our PHC supervisor, Josh, is now an ISA (International Society of Arboriculture) certified arborist. Our lawn supervisor Leon, recently became certified through the Colorado Department of Agriculture. We have a total of 4 ISA certified arborists and 5 employees licensed through the Department of Agriculture. We have another employee, Tomas, who has been with us since 2004!

We stay up to date with the latest equipment, pesticides and best management practices in the industry by attending workshops, classes and webinars. We like our staff to be knowledgeable, safe and confident so our clients can be served with excellence.

What have you found most valuable to being a member of the Greater Arvada Chamber?

They offer great classes in leadership, marketing, and great networking potential with other local businesses. They also help you stay on top of new employment laws and regulations.

What notable changes have occurred in this industry since you started?

Tree climbing equipment and safer work practices in the industry has greatly improved. Safer pesticides, chemistries and application techniques. Systemic pesticides are definitely increasing in popularity.
