By Ryan Hecht, Greater Arvada Chamber VP of Marketing and Communications
This month, we’re proud to spotlight Payroll Vault – North Metro Denver, a locally owned and operated payroll and HR services provider based in Arvada.
Owned by husband-and-wife team Mollie and David Gilligan, Payroll Vault has been serving small businesses in the North Metro area since 2018. With deep roots in the Arvada community and a passion for helping other businesses grow, Mollie and David bring a personalized and hands-on approach to an often-overlooked part of running a company: payroll and compliance.
How did you start your business start and why Arvada?
Mollie: “David grew up in Arvada, and his family owned a business here for many years. When we launched Payroll Vault in December 2018, we knew we wanted to be part of the community he loved so much growing up. Our business is all about supporting small businesses—helping them stay compliant and offering a hands-on customer experience that’s hard to come by in this industry.”
How did you get started in this field, and what do you enjoy most about it?
“We were both working for our corporate office in Littleton, I was moved from processing to sales, and Dave was in the accounting department and then moved into processing. We saw an opportunity to own the North Metro territory that was available and to work for ourselves. We knew that Arvada was the community we wanted to support. We moved into Thrive WorkPlace, right when they first opened and have been there ever since. Business is at the heart of every community, it’s fun to support and work with the businesses that make a community come alive and give it a soul. We love it! There is a lot of joy that comes from watching a business hire it’s first employee, and start their journey, we are glad to be apart of that for so many.”
What services does Payroll Vault offer? What makes you unique?
“We provide full service payroll, HR, and workforce management solutions for single owner S-Corps and small business owners. The nice thing when partnering with a small business, is you receive personalized experience and a tailored service package as opposed to being boxed into a larger solution.”

What’s one lesson you’ve learned from running a business or advice you’d give to new entrepreneurs?
“With two young kids and no staff, flexibility is key. There are no off days or ‘out of office’ messages; it’s a full-on grind. We’ve built our business on relationships and referrals and pride ourselves on providing exceptional customer service. The reward is being able to support local organizations we love and reinvest in the community that supports us.”
What advice would you give to a business that’s hiring employees for the first time?
“My guidance, from a payroll standpoint, to someone who knows that they are at the point of needing to hire and are ready to take the next step, would be to start to get your systems in place. Contact a payroll company that can walk you through getting your accounts in place and can prepare you with the proper documentation that you need to hire your first employee. The last thing that a business, hiring for the first time, needs is to find the perfect candidate and not have the proper tools in place to make them appear that they are not prepared for the new employee. Payroll provides a vail of legitimacy between an employer and employee, and provides the business owner with the confidence that they need to grow their business.”
What’s a common misconception about payroll services?
“That business owners can or should do it themselves. While technically possible, it’s often not the best use of their time, or expertise. We take the stress off their plate and help them focus on growing their business, while staying compliant.”
Are there any causes or nonprofit organizations you’re especially passionate about supporting?
“We love to support many of the local area non-profits, some of our favorite would include Epic Experience and The Arvada Center just to mention a few.”

What have you found most valuable about your Greater Arvada Chamber membership?
“We believe the Chamber serves as a backbone to the Arvada community as a whole, not just to the businesses that it works diligently to serve. The Chamber embraces the good and takes on the negative to solve the issues that impact everyone that enjoys Arvada.
The Chamber has been monumental in our growth and sustainability. We’ve immersed ourselves and have made so many valuable connections and friends. We have utilized every asset that the Chamber offers, knowing how important it is to our membership and our personal and professional growth. Plus the people are cool! :)”
