The Meta Blog: A Blog about Why YOU Should Blog Today

It’s a new year and you’ve likely been busy brainstorming your New Years resolutions, how you’re going to make 2017 your best year for business and what you can do to continue to get exposure for your business online. With so many options, it’s hard to know which online platform is the most effective. It can be incredibly overwhelming to try to sift through your choices! There’s your website, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, YouTube, online advertising, Google+, Instagram…the list goes on! But there is one thing you can do that is an effective and unique way for you to differentiate yourself: BLOG.

Now I can imagine what you’re thinking. “I’m not a writer.” “I haven’t written a paper since college!” “What would I possibly have to say?” Here’s my first piece of advice: Don’t sell yourself short! Google defines a blog as “a regularly updated website or web page, typically one run by an individual or small group, that is written in an informal or conversational style.” You don’t have to be a world-class writer to write a blog article (and actually, writing conversationally can make you more approachable!)

In an effort to inspire you, I’ve put together my top 5 reasons you should blog. There are many more than 5 reasons, but it’s a good start. Here we go:

Reason #1: Establish yourself as an industry expert!

You have knowledge and experience that seems very standard for you, but I’ll tell you a secret: most people have no idea! Whether you’re in the insurance industry or the plumbing industry, I guarantee there are tips and tricks you have that others would love to know. Blogging is a perfect way to share your knowledge and let potential customers know that you are a valuable resource!

Reason #2: Establish your voice

Often online it’s difficult to know who you can trust, who would be good to work with or who the best person to call is. There are so many options! Wouldn’t you feel better working with someone who you feel like you know even just a little bit? Blogging is a great way to establish your business as trustworthy and credible. Give people a chance to get to know you through your writing, and I promise it’ll pay off!

Reason #3: Back-linking possibilities!

A blog article is a great way to back-link to yourself! For example, if I were to write a blog about why becoming a member of the Arvada Chamber of Commerce is beneficial to your business, I would provide back-links to the perks of membership, what’s included in each membership level and anything I can include to convince you that belonging to the Chamber is a great move for your business. I would probably even link to this article from Kami Welch about the perks of joining!

Reason #4: Sharing possibilities

You know all those social media platforms I talked about earlier? LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Google+, etc? A blog article is perfect sharing material! And what a way to kill 2 birds with one stone. If you wrote just 2 blog articles per month, that’s 2 less social media posts you’d have to write! And as a fellow social media page manager, I can completely understand how nice that is. (And heck…you can even share a link on your Instagram!) If you find it hard to manage your blog and social media accounts, try hiring Plenty of Pixels – Web Design for Small Businesses. They might be able to help you with all the social media queries.

Reason #5: New year, new goals in your personal AND professional development

You’ve hopefully made goals for yourself and your business and what you’ll accomplish in 2017. Why not add blog writing to that list? Especially if you’re uncomfortable with writing, blogging is a great, low-pressure way to challenge yourself to grow. And who knows, you might impress yourself!

Anything to add to this list? Comment below! I’d love your input!
