The Modern Workplace: A Mixed-Generation Battlefield? by Megan Thompson, Spark Interiors

May 25, 2016 by Heath Rost Leave a Comment

Profiles of two partners looking at each other while arm wrestling
Gone are the days of holing up in the office, keeping your head down in your cubicle, and grinding out as much work as possible. The younger generations are entering the workforce and bringing with them refreshing energy and enthusiasm for collaboration, community, and partnership that is leading us to design innovation across the board. However, with this teamwork, noise and messiness can follow. Although communication amongst employees is vital for any company to thrive, your office must retain a professional appearance for clients and meetings. To try and get around any mess caused by team activities, some offices like to invite cleaning companies into their offices to ensure that their workspace remains clean and tidy. Some people struggle to work in a messy environment, which is why the services of companies like GREEN FACILITIES are so vital to ensure that everyone in the workforce is happy and comfortable.

However, that is only one of the issues of teamwork and the younger generation. We are also struggling to keep up and provide the ?coolest? workspaces as well as being challenged to combine the private and ?structured? offices of the more seasoned professionals with the fun and energetic landing pads of the millennials. Some people enjoy working in a quiet environment where they can really focus and concentrate to ensure that work is done to the highest quality. However, it?s understood that others might thrive better in a noisy environment. This can make it difficult to find the perfect working balance for everyone, but there are ways around it. In a mixed-generation environment, it seems to be a battle between the Xer?s, and the millennials, but I think there are people who know the cause and, just maybe, the solution. Hopefully, in the future, this can be solved to ensure that the business makes all of the employees feel happy at work.
